Get to Know… Mat John

Mat John recently started as Technical Account Manager for the Midlands, get to know him in our Q&A here…

How long have you worked in the IT industry ?

I’ve spent 15 years in the IT Industry, previous to this I worked as a multiskilled Maintenance engineer (electrical biased) fixing plant machinery which I moved into after starting an electronics apprenticeship with the MOD.

How long have you been at Advatek ?

After many years in BT as a pre-sales engineer and following that managing the pre-sales team I missed the feel of a dynamic agile company and being able to adapt quickly to customers needs so I decided to get out. Advatek was a great choice as we are small but highly skilled and we punch well above our weight.

What do like most about the industry & your job?

The speed technology moves and the monumental change it has brought to the world. I think we are living in an era where the changes will now have an exponential effect on the way we live, fuelled with the emergence of Quantum supercomputers and AI. Our industry underpins this capability. The best part about my job is its challenging, varied and I actually get to help my customers solve the challenges they face.

What’s your career highlight to date ?

Within BT I was lucky enough to work on some large complex opportunities for some high profile customers. As part of a successful tender bid I designed a state of the art network for News International to facilitate them transitioning into the Shard in London. I presented the solution to the panel in Rupert Murdoch’s board room overlooking London. We won this and now my network is still live in the Shard!

What’s your guilty pleasure ?

I cant help but like Raa Raa the Noisy Lion.. (I have a 3 and 5 year old!).

What’s on your bucket list ?

I’m lucky in that I managed to do a few things already. I got over to China to spend a week doing Kung Fu with the monks for my 40th last year and I was on a tall ship as trainee crew going from Montevideo to Ushuaia. I’d love to spend a few years over in China or go on another adventure, maybe trekking through the Amazon, or going across the Arctic.
